Beiwudang Mountain near Fangshan
A granite Daoist mountain in Fangshan County, Lüliang, distinct from the Wudang range in Hubei, with 72 peaks and a single stepped trail to a summit at 1,985 metres.
Beiwudang Mountain, also called Zhenwu Mountain and known in older texts as Longwang, Dragon King Mountain, stands in Fangshan County in Lüliang, in the middle section of the Lüliang range. It is one of Shanxi's Daoist holy places, a mass of bare granite weathered into cliffs, planned as an 80-square-kilometre scenic area of 72 peaks, 36 cliffs and 24 gullies. The main summit, Xianglu Peak, reaches 1,985 metres, and the mountain is called the first of the three Jin. Daoist activity is recorded in the Tang and Song; in 1994 it entered the national scenic area list. Its name repeats that of the Wudang range in Hubei, but the two are separate mountains.
