Xuanzhong Temple in the Stone Hills of Jiaocheng
The ancestral temple of Chinese Pure Land Buddhism, begun in 472 in Jiaocheng's Stone Wall Mountains, where Tanluan taught and Daochuo held the abbacy for thirty years.
Xuanzhong Temple lies in the Stone Wall Mountains north-west of Jiaocheng County in Shanxi, and is also known as Shibi Temple and Yongning Temple. It is the ancestral temple of the Pure Land school of Chinese Buddhism, where Tanluan taught and Daochuo held the abbacy for more than thirty years. Construction began in 472, in the Northern Wei, and took four years. Fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1090 and again in 1186, and rebuilding by the local government began in 1954; only the Hall of Four Heavenly Kings keeps its Ming fabric. It was named a national key Buddhist temple in the Han Chinese area in 1983 and a national key cultural relic protection unit in 2013.
