Chongfu Temple in Shuozhou and Its Jin Halls
A temple of the Pure Land school in a small northern city, founded in 665 and carrying three names: what the Jin halls of 1143 keep on their walls, and how much of that painting is original.
Chongfu Temple stands on Dongdajie in Shuocheng District, Shuozhou. It belongs to the Pure Land school and has carried several names: Linya Temple at its foundation, Chongfu Chan Temple after the Jin change, and Chongfu today. The founding is dated to 665, the second year of Linde under Tang Gaozong. Of the halls on its central axis, the Amitabha Hall and the Guanyin Hall are recorded as Jin buildings, and the Amitabha Hall keeps most of its original fabric from 1143. It is seven bays wide and eight rafters deep, 41.32 by 22.7 metres on plan, and its walls carry 327 square metres of painting. The temple was named a national key cultural relic in 1988.
