Jiezhou Guandi Temple

The temple stands at Jiezhou town in Yanhu District, twenty kilometres from central Yuncheng, and is the largest surviving temple to Guan Yu in China. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit and one of the three great Guan Yu temples honoured in China and overseas. A shrine was founded here in 589, the ninth year of the Sui Kaihuang era; it was rebuilt in 1014, and the present layout follows the reconstruction after a fire in 1702. The precinct covers 220,000 square metres, divided south and north. The southern part is the Jieyi Garden; the northern part is the main temple, itself split into a front court and a rear palace.
