Temple of Yao

The Temple of Yao stands at Yaomiao village in the southern suburbs of Yaodu District, Linfen. It was founded in the Western Jin on the west bank of the Fen and moved to the present site on the east bank in 658, the third year of the Xianqing era of the Tang. Yuan and Ming rebuilding followed, and the Pingyang earthquake of 1695 damaged the walls so badly that repairs took fourteen years. The main hall, Guangyun Hall, was restored in 1984 in an imitation Ming style; in April 1998 it was set on fire and collapsed, and it was rebuilt in 1999. The temple has been a protected site of Shanxi province since 1965.
