Chongshan Temple in the Middle of Taiyuan
One Ming hall survives where a thousand-room monastery stood: the Great Compassion Hall, its eight-metre painted figures, its scripture library, and the naming history behind them.
Chongshan Temple sits behind the Taiyuan Confucian Temple, at 9 Chongshan Temple Street in Yingze District. Its written history begins as a palace of Emperor Yang of Sui and a temple called White Horse Temple; in 1381 the Prince of Jin expanded it in memory of his mother, and in the Ming it became one of the largest monasteries in the province, with nearly a thousand rooms and six great halls on its axis. A fire in 1864 destroyed most of it. The Great Compassion Hall was rebuilt around in 1882, and its painted figures and scripture library are what survive.
