Huayan Temple and the Architecture of the Liao Dynasty
Datong's Huayan Temple holds the largest surviving Buddha hall in China; the article reads its frame from the eave brackets down, then turns to the hall that kept the monastery's books.
Huayan Temple stands in the old city of Datong, and is listed both as a first-batch national key cultural relics protection unit and as one of the national key Buddhist temples of the Han region. Its main hall, the Daxiongbao Hall, is the largest surviving Buddha hall in China; the second is at Fengguo Temple in Yi County, Liaoning, and the third at Shanhua Temple, which stands southeast of it in the same city. The name is shared by several temples; the Mamu Huayan Temple in Hongtong County, Linfen, is a separate house, a provincial protected site and not this one.
