The Chang Family Compound and the School Inside It
The Chang family built a walled town of houses in their own village over two centuries; only the restored part, about 120,000 square metres, can be walked today.
The Chang Family Compound stands in Chewang village, Dongyang town, Yuci District, Jinzhong. It is a large group of Qing-period northern houses built by the Chang family, one of the Shanxi merchant clans, in its own home village over more than two centuries of successive building. Within an enclosure wall pierced by eight gates, two main streets run north-south and east-west. The compound holds more than 1,500 rooms, over 50 tower houses and 13 gardens. What a visitor can walk is the part that has been restored and opened: about 120,000 square metres, of which 40,000 are dwellings and 80,000 gardens.
