Reading under the pines at Bailudong
Before it was a monument, the academy was a reading room in a mountain, and its rules were written by a man who had been exiled there.
The academy stands inside the Lushan scenic area, in the place where the Tang poet Li Bo kept a deer that was said to understand people and to walk to the county town to buy paper and ink for him. After the Tang academy fell into ruin, Zhu Xi rebuilt it when he took office in Nankang, set its rules himself, and asked the court for a plaque. It was counted with Yuelu, Juyang and Shigu as one of the four great academies of the realm.
