The argument at Ehu
In 1175, Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan met at Ehu for a philosophical debate about how people come to know things.
Ehu Academy stands in Yanshan county, in the hills near the Xin River. In the second year of the Chunxi reign, 1175, Zhu Xi, Lü Zuqian, Lu Jiuling and Lu Jiuyuan gathered there to lecture and debate, and the gathering is remembered as the Ehu meeting. The academy survives as a rebuilt complex of halls and lecture rooms, and its importance lies in what happened there rather than in the fabric: a disagreement between two schools of Neo-Confucian thought, held in person.
