Dingxi includes Lintao, the naming place of Majiayao painted pottery, and a major potato-producing region. The Ministry of Agriculture describes a modern chain spanning seed production, cultivation, storage and processing. The city’s archaeological and agricultural stories meet in a landscape shaped by the upper Yellow River and loess uplands.
The Majiayao culture takes its name from a terrace west of Majiayao village in Lintao. Painted vessels, including a swirl-patterned bottle found elsewhere in Dingxi, reveal a long and varied ceramic tradition.
Dingxi’s potato economy links seed production, field harvests, loess-slope storage and a wide range of everyday foods, according to a 2024 Ministry of Agriculture report.
