Sixteen Thousand Swans
Sanmenxia's wetland park was a sewage ditch in the 1990s and now winters more than 16,000 whooper swans within sight of the city.
The Swan Lake urban wetland park lies between the eastern and western parts of Sanmenxia city, and the municipal government lists it as a national AAAA scenic area with a current area of 8,850 mu. Its three core parts are the Shuanglong Lake white-swan viewing area, the ancient town of Shanzhou and an ecological forest belt along the Yellow River. The page records that from October to the following March tens of thousands of white swans come here to rest and winter, and notes the civic consequence of that arrival: the city has come to be known as the city of swans.
