Between Plateau and Ravine: The Road Through Hangu Pass
At the western gate of Henan, a narrow road carries the memory of the classics, the classics' author and the old road between two capitals.
Hangu Pass stands in Lingbao City at the western gate of Henan, where Henan, Shaanxi and Shanxi meet. The Sanmenxia municipal government describes the historic and cultural tourism area as a national AAAA scenic area of 3.13 square kilometres, and names its components: the Taichu Temple, the Wangqi Terrace, the De Hall, the Zhanzi Tower, the Chicken Crow Terrace, a stele forest, the pass museum, the gate tower and the old road through the pass. The page places the site between a high plateau to the west and a sheer ravine to the east, with the Qinling Mountains to the south and the Yellow River holding the north, and calls it the sacred place where Laozi wrote the Daodejing.
