Named Bells and Chariot Wheels: The Guo State Tombs
The burial ground of a small Western Zhou kingdom near Sanmenxia, where bronzes carry their owners' names and a site museum rebuilds a chariot.
The Guo state tomb field at Shangcunling in Sanmenxia holds the high-status burials of the kings and nobles of the small Western Zhou state of Guo, which the Zhou royal house relied on as one of its two arms. The Sanmenxia daily reports describe the cemetery as having been discovered from the 1990s and as having been selected for the national top-ten archaeological discoveries in 1990 and 1991 in consecutive years. A site museum built on the cemetery itself presents the finds, and a 2025 special exhibition at the Miaodigou Museum, 'The Shining Guo', displayed 320 objects and sets, including a replica of a set of chime bells excavated from the Guo Ji tomb in 1990 and a model of a Western Zhou war chariot.
