Sixty-One Islands
Nanwan Lake is a reservoir with a scenic-area name, a forested rim that filters its water and a pavilion on the dam that explains both.
Nanwan Lake is a reservoir before it is a scenic area, and the city's page presents it as both: five kilometres southwest of Xinyang, a national forest park and a national water-conservancy scenic area, with 75 square kilometres of water and sixty-one islands. Its rim carries 120,000 mu of public-benefit forest at 89 per cent cover, with 525 plant species in 116 families and more than 2,000 kinds of plants and animals. The provincial culture and tourism department, reprinting a Shihe promotion piece, repeats the old epithets, the first lake of the central plains and the bright pearl of southern Henan. On the dam, Wanghu Pavilion holds a history display on the first floor and the project's monitoring room on the second.
