The Ridge Like a Wall
Shennong Mountain is a limestone ridge of 11.5 kilometres with 16,000 pines on it, three thousand macaques below it and two official figures for its area.
Shennong Mountain lies in Ziling Town, Qinyang City, on the Jiaozuo side of the border with Jincheng in Shanxi. The Jiaozuo municipal government records a scenic area of 102 square kilometres, part of the first batch of global geoparks and a national AAAAA scenic area, and tells the naming legend directly: the Yan Emperor Shennong is said to have distinguished the five grains, tasted the hundred herbs and set up an altar for sacrifice here. The main summit, Zijinding, reaches 1,028 metres. The same page describes the White Pine Ridge as holding more than 16,000 rare dragon-scale pines across a range of nine peaks, and the mountain's monkey population as several thousand Taihang macaques divided into nine groups.
