The May 1987 Greater Khingan wildfire caused profound loss and remains central to Mohe’s public memory. Memorial events and the local fire memorial museum connect remembrance with present-day forest-fire prevention.
Mohe has exceptionally long summer days, especially around the June solstice, but it lies south of the Arctic Circle and does not experience the true polar day. Its white nights and twilight are real phenomena that need no exaggeration.
Mohe’s gold history took institutional form in the late nineteenth century, when the Qing government organized a mining enterprise near the Amur. The story includes difficult transport, border politics and the workers who built a remote mining operation.
