Dongji Pagoda: Fuyuan’s Landmark at the Eastern Edge
Fuyuan’s Dongji Pagoda rises 81 metres above Heixiazi Island. Its nine storeys, octagonal form and symbolic plaza make a modern tower into a public expression of the city’s eastern identity.
The plaza around Fuyuan’s East Pole Pagoda measures 171 metres across, echoing the stated area of the Chinese-administered part of Heixiazi Island. Fifty-six carved stone columns circle the space in reference to China’s recognized ethnic groups; displays at the base introduce culture and regional products.
