Saint Sophia: a Greek-cross church beneath an onion dome
Begun in 1907, rebuilt on its present site from 1923 to 1932, Saint Sophia combines a red-brick Greek-cross plan with a Byzantine dome and seven bronze bells.
Saint Sophia’s domes and masonry rise above a central Harbin square. Since restoration in 1997, the former church has served as a place to encounter its architecture and history, adding a civic and cultural chapter to the building’s earlier life.
