Xingkai Lake: one border lake, two waters

A long sand ridge separates an inland reed lake from a much larger transboundary lake, while the surrounding wetlands connect their seasonal life.

A wetland in a larger geography

Xingkai is a border lake system, not a single body of water. Mishan’s official scenic-area account gives Xingkai Lake an area of 4,380 square kilometres, with 1,080 square kilometres on the Chinese side and the southern part in Russia. It distinguishes this transboundary Great Xingkai Lake from Small Xingkai Lake, an inland lake of 176 square kilometres. The names mark neighboring waters with different scales and jurisdictions.

The map still needs its evidence

A natural sand ridge about 90 kilometres long divides the two lakes. On one side is the broad border lake; on the other, the smaller lake is known for dense reed beds and abundant fish. The same Mishan account places the Xinkailiu Neolithic fishing culture and archaeological site among the lake’s cultural landmarks, alongside the sand ridge, river mouth and wetlands. Water, reed marsh and the old lakeshore settlement make the ridge more than a line between two lakes: it is the narrow landform around which the region’s ecology and human history meet.
