A third benchmark on the plain

Songji No. 3 was drilled in Datong, southwest of Gaotaizi, as the third benchmark well on the Songliao Plain. It began producing on 26 September 1959. The provincial heritage account records a final depth of 1,461.76 metres and identifies it as the first exploration well on the Daqing placanticline. Its results led to the discovery of the Gaotaizi oilfield.

What remains around a well

The heritage record names the working spaces associated with Songji No. 3: a duty room, earth shelter, water well, paraffin-removal room, mud pit and oil pool. These structures show a drilling site as a small operating system, with shelter, water and equipment care beside the bore. The site was listed as a national key cultural relic in 2001.

The core and the well site

Daqing’s oilfield history exhibition hall displays a core from Songji No. 3 among nationally designated first-grade cultural relics. The sample is preserved indoors; outdoors, the associated duty room, earth shelter, water well, paraffin-removal room, mud pit and oil pool mark the support system around the bore.
