Jiejinkou: A Hezhen Cultural Village by the River

Forty-five kilometres northeast of Tongjiang, Jiejinkou’s cultural village sits beneath Jiejin Mountain in the lower river country. Its public displays bring Hezhen history, fishing life, fish-skin culture and oral performance into one place.

A village in a river landscape

Jiejinkou Hezhen Township lies on the southern bank of the Amur, downstream of its confluence with the Songhua, according to its territorial planning document. Jiamusi’s tourism page places the Jiejinkou resort 45 kilometres northeast of Tongjiang city and describes it as a national 4A-rated scenic area set against Jiejin Mountain. The mountain, river and settlement make a landscape of slopes and water rather than a single monument. The location also matters on a regional map: this is the lower river country beyond the two rivers’ meeting, not the confluence itself.

A place built to interpret culture

The Hezhen Cultural Village covers 24.88 hectares. Its displays bring together history, fishing and hunting, religious customs, fish-skin work, oral storytelling, sport, song and dance. The different forms invite different kinds of attention: an object can reveal a maker’s handling of material, while Imakan carries a narrative through spoken and sung passages. Beneath Jiejin Mountain, the public site offers several ways into the region’s Hezhen culture.

The river as context

Tongjiang’s 2025 response on Hezhen cultural tourism names Jiejinkou as a centre for intangible-heritage activity and refers to fish-skin demonstrations and Imakan performance there. The same response names Bachan separately for fishing-and-hunting cultural experience. Together, the two places show how Tongjiang has organized public interpretation across more than one township: Jiejinkou’s cultural village brings a range of subjects together, while Bachan is associated with fishing and hunting. At Jiejinkou, the landscape, cultural displays and heritage programming form a connected way to encounter the region’s Hezhen history.
