Huzhong Nature Reserve protects cold-temperate conifer forest in the Greater Khingan Mountains. Its dominant tree is Dahurian larch, Larix gmelinii, a conifer whose needles turn color and fall rather than remaining green year-round. This trait gives the forest a pronounced seasonal rhythm: summer foliage, autumn gold and bare branches in winter. Huzhong’s reserve account reports larch as 94.4 percent of dominant tree cover, with birch a smaller component, describing a landscape strongly shaped by this species.

Larch in Huzhong: A Forest That Turns with the Seasons
Huzhong Nature Reserve protects a cold-temperate conifer forest dominated by Dahurian larch, a deciduous tree that sheds its needles. The seasonal shift in color offers a way to understand the ecology of the Greater Khingan forest.

The reserve lies in the upper watershed of the Huma River, within a region whose forests are important to the Heilongjiang river system. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment records the reserve as established in 1984 with an area of 190,000 hectares, protecting cold-temperate conifer forest and wildlife. Its purpose is broader than preserving autumn color: the reserve safeguards forest succession, habitat and ecological processes across a large mountain landscape.
