One fortress in a larger group

Xunshan Fortress is a medium-sized underground position within the larger Japanese military fortress group at Dongning. The provincial tourism notice lists Dongning Fortress among the scenic sites reviewed in 2024. Its tunnels let visitors see the scale of the underground military engineering that formed one part of the wartime network.

Engineering alongside its human history

The museum’s renewed exhibition moves through four subjects: Japanese military fortifications, wartime violence, resistance and remembrance of peace. Walking through underground passages makes the structure legible as military engineering, while the exhibition places it within the history of occupation. The route from fortification to resistance and remembrance changes how the tunnels are understood: a technical installation becomes evidence of a violent wartime system and a place for public memory. The museum’s interpretation keeps these subjects together without reducing the site to its engineering.
