At the edge of two provinces

At Nianzishan, the Jin frontier system is not just a line on a map. Heilongjiang’s Department of Culture and Tourism records 9.77 kilometres of remains in this section, with 54 rampart platforms, three beacon towers and two forts. The route belongs to a wider frontier zone that crosses today’s Heilongjiang–Inner Mongolia boundary. Platforms and beacons punctuate the line: the surviving architecture suggests a defense network made of linked observation and fortified points, rather than one uninterrupted masonry wall. These counts give the Nianzishan remains a scale a visitor can picture.

Platforms, beacons and forts

Platforms and beacons punctuate the surviving line, while forts concentrate its defensive structures at particular points. The provincial description records the nearby Gannan and Longjiang sections separately: Nianzishan’s 9.77 kilometres form one stretch of a much larger frontier system. Across the open landscape, the low remains and occasional raised features preserve the positions from which that system once operated.
