A second Hezhen cultural setting

Bachan, or Eight-Fork, is a Hezhen township in Tongjiang with a cultural experience area focused on fishing and hunting heritage. A 2025 municipal response places it alongside Jiejinkou in the city’s cultural programme. Each has a distinct setting: Jiejinkou’s resort brings several cultural subjects together beneath Jiejin Mountain, while Bachan’s public interpretation centres on river-based livelihood.

Craft, story and teaching

Tongjiang’s programme includes fish-skin craft demonstrations, Imakan storytelling and teaching in schools. In its 2025 response, the city reported nearly twenty heritage workshops, more than thirty training sessions and over two thousand cumulative participants. Its Fifth Primary School offered classes in fish-skin painting and Imakan. These are citywide activities, with workshops, classrooms and stages providing different ways for people to learn and share knowledge.

A calendar tied to the river

The city also named Urigun, winter fishing and the opening-of-the-river festival in its public cultural calendar. Fishing and seasonal change provide a setting for these larger gatherings, while teaching continues through the year. Bachan’s fishing-and-hunting cultural area places one strand of that shared heritage in a particular river township.
