Where the Butterfly Lovers shared a book

Wansong Academy keeps a Hangzhou chapter of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai’s story.

A place beside the books

Zhu Yingtai wants an education in a world where that path is usually reserved for boys. In the legend, she dresses as a young man and leaves home to study. She meets Liang Shanbo, and their shared lessons become a close friendship. Hangzhou places this chapter at Wansong Academy, among wooded slopes above the city. The tale begins with something smaller than a grand romance: permission to sit beside another student, open a book and imagine a life larger than the one already arranged.

Three years, two kinds of knowledge

As their days of study pass, Yingtai comes to love Shanbo. He continues to know her as his fellow student and sworn brother. They share reading, conversation and the small habits of living close to someone, while understanding that closeness differently. Much of the story's tenderness comes from this uneven knowledge. Yingtai must keep the disguise that allowed her into the classroom; the same disguise makes it difficult to say what she now feels. Learning has opened one door and left another closed.

The long farewell

When Yingtai is called home, Shanbo accompanies her along the road in the episode often called the Eighteen-mile Farewell. She points to paired birds and other couples in the landscape, hoping he will understand. He receives the hints as friendly remarks. Finally, she proposes a match with her own supposed younger sister and asks him to visit. The reader can hear the invitation inside the disguise. Every stretch of road brings them closer to separation, while the words still fail to bring them together.

An understanding that arrives late

When Shanbo eventually visits Yingtai's home, he learns that his companion is a woman. The promised younger sister was Yingtai herself. But her family has already arranged her marriage to another man, usually named Ma Wencai in familiar versions. The obstacle has changed: a misunderstanding between two people has become a decision made around them. Shanbo returns home and falls gravely ill. By the time Yingtai can approach the life they might have shared, he has died. The missed recognition becomes a missed future.

A pair of wings

On the way to her arranged wedding, Yingtai stops at Shanbo's grave. In the legend, the tomb opens and receives her; two butterflies then rise together. The transformation gives the pair the freedom their human lives could not hold. It is why a butterfly can carry the whole story without a word. Music, theatre and different local tellings linger over different moments, yet the movement from shared books to separated lives and finally paired wings gives the legend its enduring emotional shape.

The Hangzhou chapter stays among the trees

At Wansong, the setting brings attention back to the beginning: courtyards, places of study and a hillside where a farewell can be imagined. The academy has its own later history; its association with the lovers belongs to Hangzhou's telling of the legend. For a visitor, the landscape offers a gentler way into its sadness. Before the butterflies there were two students, and before the famous ending there was the wish to learn. That wish gives Yingtai a life beyond being remembered only as a lover.
