Trees gather around the temple roofs, while footsteps continue beneath them. Lingyin’s founding is traditionally linked to the Indian monk Huili in 326; nearby, Feilai Peak’s limestone carvings add many centuries of faces to this living Buddhist landscape.
Life around the lake
Around the Lake: Streets, Temples and Memory

Listening to the Tide at Liuhe Pagoda
六和听涛
The river is broad enough to change the scale of everything beside it. First founded in 970 on Moon Wheel Hill, Liuhe Pagoda looks over the Qiantang; its present brick core dates from the Southern Song, wrapped in later timber galleries that open towards wind and water.
Evening Glow at Yue Fei’s Tomb
岳墓栖霞
The path leads from trees into a place built around a name. At the foot of Qixia Hill, the Yue Fei memorial has remembered the Song general for centuries; autumn leaves lend a warmer colour to courtyards where admiration, poetry and remembrance have gathered.
Sunshine and Rain along the Lakeside
湖滨晴雨
One bank belongs to the city, the other seems to belong to the weather. Along the eastern lakeside parks, towers and traffic recede behind walkers; rain blurs the far hills, then a clear interval brings them back across the water.
Honouring the Qian Kings
钱祠表忠
A doorway leads into courtyards where the lake’s earlier rulers are still remembered. The Qian shrine honours the five kings of Wuyue, whose legacy includes care for waterways and embankments; its halls and inscriptions give that long civic memory a place to settle.
Books and Affection at Wansong Academy
万松书缘
A path climbs through the trees towards old classrooms. Founded in 1498, Wansong Academy also offers a setting for the Butterfly Lovers legend: Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, sharing years of study before the story carries them beyond the school gates.
Following Yang Causeway
杨堤景行
A bridge lifts the path above a small reach of water, then the trees draw close again. Yang Causeway remembers Yang Mengying’s dredging work in 1508; restored in 2003, it threads the western wetland landscape through gardens, waterways and six bridges.
Clouds and Water at Santai
三台云水
A pavilion appears between trees, then doubles itself in the water. Around Yuhu Bay, west of Yang Causeway, Santai brings hills, small bridges and open pools into a layered landscape, where the eye can travel far without hurrying.
Early Spring at Meijiawu
梅坞春早
The village begins its tea year while the hills are still tender green. Southwest of the lake, Meijiawu lives with the rhythm of Longjing picking and making; a table, a fresh brew and conversation bring the hillside’s work into the courtyard.
Seeking Old Dreams on Beishan Street
北街梦寻
The lake stays at one shoulder and the hills at the other. Along Beishan Street, garden walls, villas and memorial buildings carry different chapters of Hangzhou; the walk follows a shoreline where Chinese and Western architectural details have learned to share the view.
