Ningbo.

A port city, a library of its own

Ningbo grew beside routes that carried people and goods out to sea. Its old city also holds a quieter kind of exchange: generations of readers gathered, copied and protected books. Tianyi Pavilion gives that story a physical address. Begin in its garden, where a pond, a timber library and a city street sit close together. This is a first cultural portrait of Ningbo, following the relationship between a trading city and the people who chose to keep knowledge at home.
