A Leaf with Many Lives

At China Tea Museum, the small distance between a tea garden and an exhibition opens into a much larger world of leaves, vessels and human choices.

A hedge of tea can look like a single green surface. The museum asks you to notice what happens between that living plant and a finished drink. At Shuangfeng, near the tea fields west of West Lake, Chinese tea culture and Longjing have their own exhibitions. Tea ware adds another scale: a handle shaped for a hand, a spout that directs the water, a cup brought to the lips. A familiar drink becomes a sequence of objects and choices.

A leaf does not become tea by itself

Longjing's flat shape is partly the work of hands against a heated pan. The museum's Longjing exhibition places that knowledge beside the environment in which the tea grows. The connection is useful: a hillside explains where the leaf comes from; making explains what happens next. Vessels and drinking customs continue the story after the leaves leave the pan. The object in a display case and the field outside belong to the same chain of work.

One museum, two directions

The Longjing campus is a separate part of the same museum, set among hills and tea gardens. Its World Tea Culture exhibition follows the drink into different lives and habits. That change of scale makes the museum a good starting point for reading other tea places: compare how a leaf is worked, what it is brewed in and how people share it. Longjing remains distinct, while the questions can travel beyond Hangzhou.
