After the close edges of a canal street, South Lake gives the eye somewhere to travel. A low shoreline, trees and an island building divide the water from the sky. Nanhu is the Chinese name: nan means south, hu means lake. It belongs to the experience of Jiaxing's city, offering a different scale from the outlying water towns. The lake asks for little preparation. Its first story is the simple change from a roof overhead to a wide patch of daylight.

A little room for sky at South Lake
Open water, a garden pavilion and a brief encounter with modern history give Nanhu its place within Jiaxing.

A name for changing weather
Yanyu Tower stands on the lake's central island. Its name carries the idea of mist and rain, a way of looking at water that notices atmosphere as much as outline. The garden setting gives a frame to an otherwise open scene: rooflines, trees and water can be read together. There is no need to wait for a particular kind of weather to understand the name. It suggests why a lake can keep returning to local pictures and writing, each time a little different.
A short piece of context
The lake also has an important place in modern Chinese history. The final part of the Communist Party of China's first congress was held on a boat here in 1921; the Red Boat visitors see today is a commemorative replica. That explains the memorial presence around the lake. For an initial introduction to Jiaxing, this brief context can sit beside the landscape itself: a city waterline, a pavilion among trees, and room to pause before returning to the streets.
