Taierzhuang: Three Kilometres of Old Canal and a Fortnight of Street Fighting
A canal town thirty kilometres north-east of Xuzhou fought street by street in March and April 1938, and rebuilt afterwards as the largest ancient city in China.
Zaozhuang stands in the south of the province, with Jining to the west and north, Linyi to the east and Jiangsu to the south; since January 2019 it has been the smallest prefecture-level city in Shandong. It administers five districts and one county-level city, Tengzhou, and counted 3,855,601 people at the 2020 census. The ground is uneven: hills take 54.6 per cent of the area and plains 26.6 per cent. The city took its name in 1912, when the charter of the Zhongxing Mining Company recorded that the company's main lay at Zhaozhuang, north of Yi county; the village itself had been named for its jujube trees. Coal has been dug here since the early Ming, and in the 1980s half the coal supplied to the Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai region came from Zaozhuang.
