Forty Days at Linyi, and the Offices That Followed
More than forty days of fighting at Linyi in 1938, then a string of institutions: a committee seated in a temple, a provincial government in a town, and a post office carried out of the mountains.
The Yimeng base area is not a single site but a stretch of country: the hills and villages north of Linyi, which became the rear of the war in southern Shandong. What is documented is institutional rather than grand. In August 1940 the Shandong wartime work promotion committee was formed at Qingtuo Temple in Yinan county, and in September 1943 it was renamed the wartime administrative committee. In August 1945 the provincial government of Shandong was seated at Dadian town in Junan county. In July 1948 three separate administrations were merged into one, with its office in the city of Linyi, seven special districts and forty-nine counties. The memorials are still standing in the towns below the hills.
