The Village That Printed the Gods
Yangjiabu has cut and printed New Year pictures since the end of the Ming, and is counted with Yangliuqing and Taohuawu among the three great print towns.
Yangjiabu is a village in the Hanting district of Weifang, and it is one of the places where the Chinese New Year print became an industry. Weifang was the largest producer and distributing centre of kites and woodblock New Year prints in Chinese history, and Yangjiabu is counted with Yangliuqing in Tianjin and Taohuawu in Suzhou as one of the three great homes of the print. The village's prints began at the end of the Ming dynasty and reached their peak under the Qing. Families replaced the old sheets with new ones on the eve of the Spring Festival, and the subjects were flowers, beauties, landscapes and figures from myth and legend. A folk art park in the village keeps the workshops.
