The City That Made a Festival of a Toy
Weifang has flown kites for centuries and has held an international kite festival every April since 1984; in 1988 it declared itself the kite capital.
The Weifang World Kite Museum stands at 66 Xingzheng Street in the Kuiwen district. Construction began on 1 July 1987 and the museum opened on 1 April 1989, which makes it the first museum in China given entirely to kites. It covers 12,000 square metres of ground with 8,100 square metres of building, and the shape comes from the Weifang dragon-head centipede kite: a ceramic dragon runs along the ridge and the roof is laid in peacock-blue glazed tile. Inside there are eight halls showing more than a thousand kites in five classes, with over three hundred documents and objects. It is rated a national 3A scenic area.
