Three Rivers, Three Different Source Landscapes

The Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang headwaters lie within the wider Sanjiangyuan region. Each river has its own valleys, counties and park areas.

Start with three separate river stories

Sanjiangyuan means the sources of three great rivers: the Yangtze, the Yellow River and the Lancang. The name describes a broad highland region, not one valley or an interchangeable landscape. In Yushu, the Lancang cuts through the canyon country of Angsai in Zadoi County. In Qumalai, village patrols in the Yangtze Source Park follow roads, streams and high grassland.

The rivers have different geographies and different local work around them. A guide in Angsai may know the bends of the Lancang canyon; a ranger in Qumalai may patrol a section assigned to a village team. The names become easier to place when each is connected to the ground where people encounter it.

The Yellow River source crosses a prefecture boundary

The Yellow River source story reaches across Yushu and Guoluo. A 2026 Qinghai Daily report identifies Qumalai County in Yushu and Madoi County in Guoluo as central parts of the source region; it describes the upper river as a network of streams, wetlands and lakes rather than a single point. Madoi’s lakes belong to the Yellow River story, while Qumalai also holds source landscapes associated with the Yangtze.

This is why a map of Sanjiangyuan needs more than three labels. Each river’s upper reaches spread across water, grassland and administrative boundaries. Keeping those lines distinct helps readers understand why “three sources” is a regional framework, while the village, county and river beside a person may be more specific.
