One name, several histories

Liu Sanjie can mean a legendary singer, a body of song traditions, a film character or a modern scenic performance. The name links these distinct histories. Yangshuo is especially associated with the modern river production.

China’s national intangible-heritage registry identifies Yizhou, now a district of Hechi, as the principal community associated with the Liu Sanjie song tradition. It describes Liu Sanjie as a singer revered in folk belief, a legendary figure rather than a documented year-by-year biography. Yangshuo’s connection comes through a modern production.

The songs are wider than a love story

The registry includes songs of daily life, production, love, ritual, riddles, stories and creation traditions. They carry knowledge, mark occasions, pose challenges and give form to social relationships. Translation can convey words while leaving timing and social context less visible, and a staged programme may present only selected forms from the wider repertoire.

Film made a new kind of cultural memory

A 2018 study by Li Qinglin and Zhao Ziyuan examined the film Liu Sanjie through its imagery and cross-cultural circulation. It discussed the combination of song, landscape, labour and romance, and the film’s reception beyond mainland China, particularly in Southeast Asia. The film created a widely shared cinematic memory of Liu Sanjie, distinct from the varied song traditions associated with her name.

The river becomes a theatrical medium

The March 2004 premiere report of Impression Liu Sanjie describes a production that began with an image of the earlier film, then brought the surrounding peaks into view through lighting. Boatmen raised long bands of red cloth from the river. These were concrete theatrical operations: a cinema image supplied recognition, illumination changed the perceived boundary of the stage, and coordinated movement turned the water into a surface for colour.

The real landscape was therefore also a designed medium. Reflections, distance and the scale of the hills enlarged gestures that would read differently in an indoor theatre. The production’s connection to Liu Sanjie lay partly in this sequence of adaptations, from song traditions to cinema and then to outdoor spectacle. The March 2004 account records the production’s premiere staging.

Several histories behind one name

The legendary figure remains a shared cultural reference; community song traditions carry varied social purposes; film and scenic theatre are artistic works made for particular audiences. Their connections give the name a broad cultural life without making one version stand for all the others.
