Zhuhai Road’s arcades, shopfronts and deep merchant plots preserve the form of a coastal commercial street.
Beihai Old Street
Beihai Old Street is a useful place to read the qilou, or arcade-fronted commercial building. Facades are only the beginning: the relationship between street, shade, shop and upper floors gives the architecture its interest. Its later mercantile history should be distinguished from Han-era Hepu.
