Beihai Old Street: Arcade Houses and Merchant Plots

Zhuhai Road’s arcades, shopfronts and deep merchant plots preserve the form of a coastal commercial street.

An arcade at walking height

The qilou on Beihai's old merchant street places built space above a covered pedestrian edge beside the shops. Decorated facades rise above a practical shelter that shapes movement along the street.

Columns mark the covered edge, while doorways lead into deeper plots. The arcade connects commerce inside with people passing outside, making shop and street part of one architectural arrangement.

A narrow face can conceal a long building

Accounts of Beihai's old street describe comparatively narrow commercial frontages with much deeper buildings behind them. Selling, storage and domestic life could share that extended footprint.

Upper windows and ground-floor openings served different activities within the same plot. Along the street, similar facade rhythms could conceal varied lives behind them. The depth of the buildings gives the continuous frontage a third dimension.

The street has several historical layers

Historical reporting describes the commercial street's development in the later nineteenth century and its enlargement and consolidation under the name Zhuhai Road in 1927. Businesses supplied everyday provisions as well as goods for trade.

This merchant-town history forms a later chapter in the region's coastal connections. Hepu's Han archaeology belongs to an earlier period and a different location; Beihai's arcades preserve the spatial arrangements of a much later commercial street.

Travelling decorative ideas

Arches, mouldings and repeated window forms place neighbouring buildings in a recognisable family while varying in proportion and detail. The practical commercial arrangement could be paired with decorative ideas that travelled and were reworked in the local streetscape.

Present-day use is another layer

Food, leisure and visitor-facing businesses now occupy parts of the old street. The buildings continue to be maintained, altered and used, while their arcades shape the movement of people past shopfronts.

Signs and new interiors sit within an inherited arrangement of shelter and exposure, selling and passing, narrow frontage and hidden depth. Present-day work adds another layer to the merchant street.
