West Street and Yangshuo’s International Turn

Local memories, language schools and street-vendor research reveal how travel transformed a small-town street into a contested shared space.

Before the international label

West Street sits in Yangshuo's town centre, but its international reputation grew through a modern transformation. In a 2018 China News Service report, long-term resident Guan Shulin recalled an earlier street where farming and small-scale commerce overlapped. The river landing at its eastern end brought arriving travellers toward the street.

His memories place households and ordinary work within the later tourism district. Buildings and their street-front spaces acquired new uses as visitors arrived. The street's transformation grew from premises, skills and livelihoods being adapted to changing opportunities.

New kinds of work

The same report describes residents turning street-front space toward tourism and interviews an Australian business owner drawn to Yangshuo through guidebook culture. Accommodation, cafés, craft shops and other services became part of the street's identity.

Travellers arrived with expectations and spending power. Residents and incoming businesspeople responded, changing what later visitors expected to find. Guidebooks influenced journeys; the businesses created around those journeys reinforced the street's reputation. Image and material economy developed together.

Language as a reason to stay

A 2012 China Tourism News account traced the backpacker economy's growth from the later 1980s and described language-training institutions developing from the early 1990s. They served Chinese learners of English and foreign learners of Chinese. The report also discussed people combining work with language practice.

Language belonged to more than customer service. It became a skill to acquire and a reason to spend time in Yangshuo. Multilingual signs formed the visible surface of a longer history of people studying, working and making contact through the street.

Competing uses of public space

Researchers Wu Chuanlong, Sun Jiuxia and Deng Jialin examined West Street's mobile vendors in a 2020 Human Geography article. Their analysis distinguished formal management, which could classify vendors as out of place, from informal relationships in which other street users accepted them.

The study reveals public space negotiated among different participants. Moving through, earning a living, shopping, delivering goods and maintaining order bring different needs into the same street. Mobile sellers occupy a position distinct from businesses with established premises, adding another layer to the district's commercial life.

A street remembered from different positions

Memories of West Street can centre on a quieter era, lower prices, international encounters or a stronger sense of local life. Different participants experienced those periods differently: a traveller, resident, vendor and business owner could attach different values to the same change.

The street's modern history contains all these positions. Changing livelihoods, language learning and the negotiation of shared space give its international reputation a concrete human setting, extending beyond the signs and shopfronts that first catch a visitor's eye.
