A project measured in village visits

A 2024 report from the Nyingchi government describes a folk-song and dance documentation project completed the previous year. The team spent 304 days collecting material and visited 25 villages across 14 townships in Bayi, Milin and Gongbo’gyamda. More than 200 people took part. The project gathered around 130 audio recordings, over 2,000 dance videos, more than ten folk-song videos and 135 photographs.

The numbers show how a local tradition can be documented through different media. Audio preserves the sound of a performance; video records movement and gathering; photographs hold moments from the fieldwork. Together, these materials make a substantial archive of the project’s encounters across villages.

From recordings to working materials

The project also prepared materials that could be read and studied. The report says 64 folk-song lyrics were translated and 64 musical scores prepared; 350 books on Gongbo folk music were printed. Each form opens a different route into the songs: recordings keep the voice, notation makes musical structure visible, and translations bring the words to readers across languages.

The report also records 14 documentary videos about dance forms. From village visits to audio files, scores and films, the project moved between performance and archive, giving songs and dance more than one way to be encountered.

When documentation meets performance

A separate 2024 intangible-heritage event report lists Gongbo arrow song among the public performances. It offers another view of the tradition alongside the documentation project: one report describes the long work of collecting material across villages; the other places a performance before an audience.

Taken together, the accounts show two settings for cultural transmission—fieldwork that assembles recordings and a public event where song is performed. The project’s 304 days, 64 translated lyrics, 64 scores and 14 documentary films provide a concrete record of how this work was carried out in Nyingchi.
