Fahai enters the White Snake story carrying a firm belief: a human and a spirit belong to different worlds. Bai Suzhen, who has made a home with Xu Xian, has everything to lose from that boundary.
In an early printed telling collected by Feng Menglong, Fahai helps reveal and contain the spirits. His bowl restores order to a frightening world. Later romances move closer to Bai Suzhen’s wish for marriage and family, and the same monk becomes the person who stands in their way.
A story that changes with its heart
The confrontation at Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang and the separation beneath Hangzhou’s Leifeng Pagoda give this struggle its memorable places. One holds a clash of powers; the other holds the long wait that follows.
As performances and retellings return to these scenes, the feelings around Fahai shift. His certainty meets Bai Suzhen’s tenderness and determination. The story endures in the space between them, where a rule about the world encounters a wish for an ordinary life.
