The pump station and its purpose

The Elliot Pumping Station formed part of a wider water supply system connected to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir. The heritage trail records it, together with a filter bed and staff quarters, as an early twentieth-century waterworks site. Its job was practical: moving and treating water for urban use. The surviving traces connect a modern university setting with infrastructure that once served the city.

From military land to public works

The station’s story also touches the changing use of land around the university. The former Elliot Battery nearby adds a military layer to the landscape; the pumping station belongs to the later story of the city’s water supply system.

An infrastructure landscape

The pumping station ceased operation in 1993. Its history can be read as a sequence of uses: water infrastructure embedded in a landscape that later became part of a university environment. Old machinery and service buildings remind us that cities depend on facilities beyond the visible reservoir or tap. The preserved structures make the former waterworks legible within today’s university landscape.
