Changdao Islands

The Changshan Islands, also known as the Miaodao or Temple Islands, are an archipelago of 32 islands across the southern portion of the Bohai Strait, the waterway that connects the Bohai Sea to the Yellow Sea; they lie between the Jiaodong and Liaodong peninsulas and were anciently called the Sandy Gate Islands. Their land area is 56 square kilometres, their waters cover 8,700 square kilometres and their coastline runs 146 kilometres. Ten of the 32 islands have permanent settlements, the most populated being South Changshan and Tuoji. A national nature reserve and a national forest park lie on the islands, on a flyway that crosses the Bohai Sea. In 2020 Changdao County was abolished and its territory was folded into the new Penglai District.
