A winter ground in Deep Bay

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department describes Tsim Bei Tsui as a major roosting and feeding ground for wintering waders and ducks. Its list of species regularly seen here includes Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon, Black-headed Gull, Grey Plover and Eurasian Curlew.

What the list tells us

These names show the range of waterbirds associated with the site, from ducks to waders and a gull. AFCD’s separate estimate of 50,000–60,000 wintering waterfowl applies to Mai Po; it is not a count for Tsim Bei Tsui. The distinction keeps a site-level species list from being mistaken for a local census.

Watch quietly, keep your distance

AFCD advises birdwatchers to move lightly, keep quiet and stay well away from birds and nests. Avoid disturbing wildlife or its habitat, and be considerate of other visitors. These small choices help preserve the conditions that make Deep Bay valuable to birds.
