The Old Wan Chai Post Office was built in 1912–1913 and began operating on 1 March 1915. Its L-shaped form is modest beside the larger institutional buildings of the city, but its role was woven into daily life. A post office brought written communication, parcels and official correspondence into the neighbourhood at a time when the city’s networks were expanding.

Old Wan Chai Post Office and Neighbourhood Service
Opened in 1915, the former Wan Chai Post Office has since moved from postal service to environmental education and community use.

A building after the mail
The post office later changed functions. The Antiquities and Monuments Office records its use as an environmental resource centre and notes that, after renovation, it was renamed kNOw Carbon House in 2024. The shift from postal service to environmental education gives the building a new public purpose while retaining its association with a local civic institution.
Continuity through reuse
The building’s history is not a story of one function frozen in time. It records a sequence: construction, the opening of a neighbourhood post office, a later resource centre and its current named use. The building’s changing uses show how a public institution can remain relevant after the service for which it was built moves elsewhere.
