Sung aloud

Manas is sung by a manaschi without instruments. China's 2009 inscription and Kyrgyzstan's later trilogy are different entries.

A voice without the instruments

UNESCO inscribed Manas for China in 2009. A manaschi sings it without instrumental accompaniment. The listing places those performances at social gatherings, community celebrations, weddings, funerals and concerts. Melody is adapted to the story and to the characters. Phrases from the epic, the listing says, have entered everyday speech. The subject is the hero Manas, his life and his line, told aloud. Nothing in that description asks for an instrument under the voice. Regional tellings vary. The unaccompanied voice is the common rule the inscription records. When instruments or a staged chorus join, the evening has become a different form.

Two list entries

China's 2009 element is one list entry. Kyrgyzstan's 2013 inscription of a Manas trilogy is another, and the two are not one file. The Chinese listing says Kyrgyz people in China, and in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, regard the epic as a shared cultural form: public entertainment, a way of holding history, and something passed to the young. Sharing a story across borders is not the same as sharing a single inscription text. Kizilsu is a Kyrgyz autonomous prefecture where the epic is sung and programmed. The listing does not place every Kyrgyz person in this prefecture alone. A practice can be hosted here and still belong more widely.

A park and a protection centre

The 2023 culture notice names Kizilsu's folk park and, as the body responsible, the prefecture's centre for intangible-heritage protection and Manas research. The park has hosted manaschi performance, including a singing contest, and it has also programmed a Manas dance-drama. A contest of singing and a staged drama are different evenings. The notice also sets out rooms for komuz playing and for making that instrument. Those rooms belong to a plucked lute. They do not turn Manas into an accompanied song. The park is one address for hearing the epic in this prefecture. A wedding or a funeral where a manaschi is asked to sing remains the setting the UNESCO listing describes.
