Ürümqi is where many journeys through Xinjiang now begin. This first meeting stays with the Grand Bazaar's workshops and food, and leaves the rest of the contemporary city for later articles.

One armguard, one room

A silk armguard dug at Niya in 1995 now has a room of its own in the regional museum in Ürümqi: five colours of warp, phoenix and tiger motifs, a replica Han loom, and a case that holds the climate steady.
