In the morning, West Lake belongs to familiar movements: a runner following the water, a walker passing beneath the trees, the brief pause where a view opens. The lake has long been a place for local exercise as well as visitors. Seeing it this way changes the picture. The celebrated landscape becomes somebody’s ordinary morning, a piece of the city used again and again until a path feels like an old acquaintance.
A city, many lives
The small hours of an ordinary day
Morning footsteps, leaves opening in a glass, and the scent of autumn: a city comes into focus through small things.
Before the day gathers speed
Time inside a glass
At a tea table, the day can be measured differently. Hot water meets green leaves; some float, some settle, and slowly the glass becomes a small moving landscape. Longjing tea connects Hangzhou’s hills with its tables. A cup brings the surrounding countryside into the city through colour, scent and the feel of a pause. The same leaf has another life in the kitchen, where tea and food share a quieter thread of local taste.
Autumn arrives by scent
In Manjuelong, osmanthus can make a season noticeable before you see the flowers. The blossoms are small, their fragrance unexpectedly far-reaching. Osmanthus is Hangzhou’s city flower, and around the village its autumn presence reaches tea tables and sweet foods too. Bottles of preserved flowers carry a little of that season beyond the bloom. Between a lakeside morning and a fragrant mouthful, the city leaves its memory in things small enough to overlook.
