A name made on stage
Hongxian Nü was a stage name. Born Kuang Jianlian in Guangzhou's Xiguan district in 1925, the performer spent more than seventy years in an artistic career that included Cantonese opera and film. Her roles gave very different women a voice. She became the founder of the Red School, a performance lineage especially associated with the dan, or female-role, tradition.
An opera school in this sense lives through performers: in singing, gesture and the way a character takes shape on stage. A new generation has to learn the work and make it audible again.
A house and an art center
Two Guangzhou places preserve different parts of her story. The Hongxian Nü Art Center was established with city investment in 1996 for collecting, exhibitions, performances, research and artistic exchange. Hongxian Nü herself served as its first director.
Her former residence in Huaqiao Xincun, in Yuexiu District, opened to the public in 2015 and became a listed historic building in 2018. A career spread across stages also left this quieter place in Guangzhou.
A role passed to another performer
Sou Shuyuan, often rendered as Searching the Academy, is one of the classic works kept in the Ma Shizeng and Hongxian Nü repertory. A later Red School performer, Su Chunmei, won the 28th Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre with the work. A named play thus connects generations through performance, rather than through biography alone.
The art center also worked with Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theater on The Return of Red, bringing stage characters based on Ma Shizeng and Hongxian Nü into a modern Cantonese opera. The artists' lives became material for another performance. Their legacy continues whenever a role is learned, rehearsed and played.
